Ensemblage

Ensemblage is a curation which cannot be curated.
Ensemblage is a contrivance.
Ensemblage is a pair of concerts.

Do you have an idea for a music group that you’ve been kicking around in the attic of your mind? Have you ever asked yourself: “Should I just use my own  name, or should I have a moniker?” “Hmm, but, then where am I going to play?” “What am I going to do, tour? I have a job.”

The 11th annual Dog Star Festival requests the participation of 4-6 newly conceived groups to premiere new material in (2) upcoming concerts. Ensemblage is an experiment in experimentation, branding, alchemy, context, and intentionality. This rapid formation of new ensembles is meant to motivate and catalyze new ideas, and to accelerate the administrative constructs that support the staying power of  a musical entity.

We seek fresh new ensemble initiatives, whose practice can challenge the notion of a ‘band’, and can hopefully inform and pervade associated modes of presentation long after the conclusion of the Dogstar Festival. A wide range of musical styles and instrumentations are welcome, with a preference toward less  traditionally song-based approaches, and toward groups of 2 or more.

Start a new band from scratch, and you will find an instantaneous, rich context for premiering your new hairbrained scheme to a sea of open ears, twice! Expose your new musical outfit on May 21st. Reflect, rehearse, regroup, and return on June. Ensemblage 2 will most likely be presented in a different venue with different acoustic  and spatial  properties.

We request that groups establish a name, an internet presence of some kind, and that they produce one or more  pieces  of printed ephemera and/or recorded material between Concert 1 and Concert 2.

Please send your proposals to [email protected]

Include group name, members, a brief description, links to previous work, and any technical specifications you may require.
